Afu Ra feat. GZA – “Big Acts, Little Acts” b/w “DJ Premier RMX” What’s so amazing, to me at least, is that I haven’t really stuck my ear to the speaker since I heard “Mic Stance” by Afu-Ra, which was most definitely hot. Another aspect of Afu, regarding this 12″, is that the b-side is better than the a-side–and the b-side is the remix.

Afu spits over a beat by True Master on the a-side, the original version of the track. The beat comes across with the average Wu-Tang vibe, but more “head-bobbable” than some RZA beats. Afu has been a genius with lyricism since day one, and he improves like few emcees succeed in proving after a gang of singles or an LP or two. Now, the b-side, expertly produced by Gang Starr beatsmith, DJ Premier. The beat is underground, new school, and old school at the same time. The bassline is real reminscent of “Nas Is Like”, and the samples effectively add to that effect. GZA appears on this, dropping literal sickness; possibly one of my favorite verses. It is proof, Premier can hit off a great remix, even if his beats are somewhat monotonic. [Jeff]
