Artist Description Sankofa Billy Bossij Presents The Igloo Mix review by Jay Seagraves It was in early 1999 that I first heard Sankofa rap He had long been recognized as perhaps the Internets greatest textual lyricist but it was thought by many that his peculiar style would have a hard time making the transition from the keyboard to the studio After spending the better part of a year in China Sankofa visited premiere lyricist and all around great emcee Kashal-Tee in Kashs native Sweden There Kash taught the then novice Sankofa how to flow and his mentorship materialized in the form of the Pig Lego Slop demo and later the tuned up Jonahs Saucony EP Though Sankofas style was a bit rough around the edges it was evident to all that an elite emcee was in the making Though Billy Bossij Presents The Igloo Mix is far from a perfect release it is the first real glimpse of Sankofas potential greatness
Sankofa once told me he wasnt a very good freestyler and judging from his painfully evident bout with stage fright at Scribble Jam I was ready to agree with him However Spon later named Sankofa as one of the best freestylers on the planet and I assumed he was joking He was not Over the course of Billy Bossijs eleven off the dome tracks Sankofa drops complex multi-syllabic rhyme schemes littered with punchlines and word play Turning the party out like a revolution seeking restitution better get solutions and Im not talking about what you need with the contacts you got a contract? well its more like Jon Konkak As Danja Mowf once said real emcees can rock over anything and Sankofa proves this by attacking such winners as The 504 Boys Wobble Wobble and Trinas Da Baddest Bitch liberating the innocent beats from their captors abundant ignorance
Even sicker are Billy Bossijs written tracks most notably beatjackolantern II (peep the mp3 ) As one of Sankofas fellow emcees said of this track Sankofas flow lyrics and incredible breath control are on a par with just about any emcee out there in any category How insane is it that one of the worlds top fifty (or twenty-five? ten? five?) emcees cannot find quality production and has to drop rhymes over lesser emcees instrumentals? Producers should be paying this guy gs just for the honor of working with him Then again Track 9 proves that Sankofa doesnt even need a beat at all to show and prove
With that said the lack of original production is The Igloo Mix s only real flaw Yes Sanks flow gets mildly tripped up on the freestyle tracks but this only further establishes their authenticity The concepts are for the most part non-existent but how many emcees can truly come off the dome with extended metaphors and works of satire? Track 16 has Sank trying his hand at something a little different and succeeding but the vast majority of the CD is on the battle tip Its a shame that he will be missing Scribble Jam this time around to attend a friends wedding because barring stage fright and favorite-playing judges Sankofa vs ADeeM could be one hell of a final And regardless of his future as a freestyle combatant Billy Bossijs written tracks lay the foundation for what is sure to be an awe-inspiring career as a recording artist
